Starbucks and Twitter


Starbucks has introduced a beta program called Tweet-a-Coffee. This program allows you to buy a $5 gift card for a friend through Twitter. In order to get people to participate, they are giving away a $5 gift card to the first 100,000 people who tweet a gift card to someone else. 

Starbucks has tried this program with Facebook and I don’t believe that it was entirely successful. Many people, including me, thought it was a scam when first released. There were so many other ads that were offering fake Starbucks gift cards in exchange for completing a survey or sharing it with your friends.

Starbucks only has 5 million Twitter followers compared to the 35 million on Facebook. I am not convinced that Starbucks has enough followers with interest in this type of program to make it worthwhile on Twitter. If it wasn’t very successful on Facebook, who says that it will succeed on another social media site. If this is to work Starbucks must make sure that no other companies are posing as them and scamming followers and they must convince consumers that this is the new trendy way to send a thank you or a birthday gift.
